Hard fought wins for Jalandhar teams in Nehru hockey

New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) Government Model Schol, Ladowali, and Government School, Harnam Dass Pura, both from Jalandhar, recorded hard fought wins over their rivals in the super league of the 25th Nehru Sub Junior boys' hockey tournament here today.

Earlier, former champion Birsa Munda Vidyapitha, Rourkela, split points as they played a goalless draw with Govt. Model School, Chandigarh.

In a keenly contested match, Govt. Model School, Ladowali, overcame G.R.M. School, Nangloi (Delhi) 2-1 after leading 1-0 at half time.

Harwinder Singh rattled the Nangloi side as he scored a superb goal in the very first minute of the game. The Delhi side tried very hard for the equaliser but the Jalandhar boys defended their citadel well by crowding it.

Howevr, Nangloi boys kept the pressure on and finally managed to draw parity in the 53rd minute when Sumit converted a penalty corner (1-1).

Ladowali forwards launched a furious counter assault and earned a penalty corner in the 59th minute which was converted by Ajay Singh and that turned out to be the winner.

Govt. School, Harnam Dass Pura, waged a grim battle to subdue spirited BGS Uttam singh School, Khadoor Sahib (Punjab), 1-0.

The all-Punjab clash produced a fast-paced game and Jalandhar team surged ahead in the 29th minute through Harjinder Singh.

Khadoor Sahib boys tried hard for the equaliser but all their moves were foiled by the Jalandhar defenders.

The second half saw some pacy exchanges with Khadoor Sahib boys having slight edge over their rivals but the equaliser eluded them.
