Editors Guild demands action on blocking of channels in Guj
New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) The Editors Guild of India today condemned the Gujarat government's action of blocking the cable distribution of major news channels and termed it as ''an assault on the freedom of the Press''.
Several TV channels, which aired the Tehelka's expose on Gujarat communal riots, faced a blackout yesterday and therefore many people in the state could not view it.
Secretary General of the Guild K S Sachidananda Murthy said an inquiry team of the Guild, which had probed the media coverage of the Gujarat riots in 2002, had termed the blackout of legitimate media as not only ''undemocratic'' but feared that it would lead to rumours replacing news and thereby cause ''grave damage'' to social order.
He demanded strong action against those responsible for it.
