China for fortifying strategic ties with India

Beijing, Oct 27: Emphasising the broad space for cooperation with India, China today said it hoped to continuously deepen and expand the strategic partnership between the two countries.

''We hope to continuously deepen and expand the friendly cooperation between the two countries and enrich the contents of the China-India strategic partnership of cooperation,'' senior Communist Party of China leader Liu Qi told visiting Indian Congress President Sonia Gandhi during a meeting.

India and China share a deep friendship and there was broad space for bilateral cooperation, Mr Liu, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the ruling CPC, told Ms Gandhi.

Ms Gandhi, who is here on five-day visit, expressed happiness at the continuous development of bilateral ties between India and China, Xinhua reported.

She also called for greater cooperation and promotion of bilateral exchanges among the two peoples, especially among the youths.

As President of the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games, Mr Liu also briefed Ms Gandhi on the preparation for the Games.

India and China had reiterated their commitment to strengthening and stepping up their partnership to a higher level during Ms Gandhi's meetings with President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao here yesterday.

Besides Beijing, the president of India's ruling party will visit Xi'an, capital of northwestern Shaanxi Province, and China's economic hub Shanghai.

Ms Gandhi is here on the invitation of the ruling CPC.
