Manipal, Oct 26 (UNI) The Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and Chairman of (TIFAC) 'Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment' R Chidambaram today stressed that India should aim to be economically developed, scientifically advanced and go for strong defence set ups with advanced scientific capability, requiring long term sustainability of the GDP growth rate.

Inaugurating the three-day TIFAC-CORE (Centres of Relevance and Excellence) Meet, TCM, organised by the Manipal Life Science Centre of Manipal University here, Dr Chidambaram stated that development without security was vulnerable and security without development was meaningless, as these two were the two faces of the same coin.

A robust innovation system was required with proper interaction between institutions and industries. The TIFAC had a vital role to play in this regard, he said.

He noted that the academic institutions had possessed good potential in R and D, while industries were lacking required manpower to take up R and D activity, which was coming in the way of overall development of the sector.

He said even as many Indian SMEs could now produce world class products it only included few sectors such as auto components. The SMEs had little access to modern R and D activities.
