Puducherry, Oct 26 (UNI) Manalaipet village in Mannadipet assembly constituency was cut off from Puducherry region following flood in the Sankarabharani river due to incessent rainfall in the area for the last two days.

The administration had constructed a bed dam and a bridge across the Sankarabharani river at Manalipet. Even though the construction of the bridge was completed, it could not be commissioned due to lack of approach road on eighter sides because of some land dispute with private parties. As a result, villagers used to get down into the river and cross the bed dam to get the other side.

In the meantime, considerable water was stored in the bed dam causing flood and preventing people from the village to cross over to the other side. If they want to reach Puducherry, they will have to travel 25 kilometers to Mylam and then via Gorimedu.

The people of the village had met the Chief Minister N Rangasamy in this regard and the officials were thinking of putting a hole on the bed dam to help the water drain so that the people could cross over to the other side as usual.

Meanwhile, with the construction of the bridge over the Uppanaar drain here in progress, the people residing on either side of it were in danger of facing the drainage water seeding into their huts.

DMK Youth-wing President R Siva MLA in a statement today said due to the construction work, the workers had blocked the main way for the water to flow through both sides.

With heavy rain lashing Puducherry, the drainage water getting blocked was likely to enter into the huts, he said and urged the administration to take immediate steps to remove the blocks and allow the water flow off as usual.
