Wrestlers come to blows after India vs World event cancellation

By Staff

Ludhiana, Oct 25 (UNI) All hell broke loose when wrestling hulks came to blows, hurling chairs and abuses at each other when they were told by the local organisers that the India versus World wrestling shows scheduled to be held at Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala had been cancelled due to organisational problems.

All this happened during the course of a media conference at the Park Plaza hotel here today. The wrestling shows were to be held at Jalandhar tomorrow, at Ludhiana on Sunday and at Patiala on October 28.

After clawing at each other, the wrestlers, all of whom had fought in WWF bouts, turned their anger towards the mediapersons present and hurled abuses at them. '' Bloody Indians, I will not spare you'', one of the wrestlers from a western nation shouted while pointing his fingers at mediapersons.

Sensing the angry mood of the wrestlers, mediapersons took to their heals, many of them falling on each other. In the meele some of the them even lost their mobile sets.

The police arrived on the scene after mediapersons made frantic calls to the SSP's office. SP (headquarters) Snehdeep Sharma and SP (detective) Gurpreet Singh arrived on the scene and told the organisers to reign-in the wrestlers.

Wrestler Tigerjit Singh who was instrumental in bringing the wrestlers to India (Punjab) for the mega show later tendered an apology to the police and the media. He promised to take action against those who had hurled abuses at Indians and were responsible for the chaos inside the hotel.

The trouble began when an organiser informed the media that the wrestling bouts to be held at the Guru Nanak stadium here had been cancelled due to technical reasons. At this point one of the wresters identified as Nikita began hurling abuses at Indians.

This infuriated Tigerjeet, an Indian settled in the United States and he slapped Nikita. This brought the other wrestlers, including the women, on their feet and they began abusing and hurling chairs at each other and then turned towards the media.

Later Tigerjeet said that the anger was a spontaneous reaction to the announcement by the organisers. ''It was more out of frustration, no harm was intended to anyone'', he said while apologising to the media.

Mediapersons who later held a meeting demanded action against the wrestlers.

The show at all the three places has been cancelled as the organisers have failed to get the requisite permission for the event.

The Ludhiana and Patiala district administrations had asked the organisers of India versus World wrestling bouts to provide the antecedents of the participants. The administration served the notice after getting reports that the antecedents of some of the participants was doubtful.

Besides Tigerjeet Singh and Tiger Ali Singh the other names figuring in the advertisments released by the organisers are those of Xena, Jenny, Kacey, Jerry Lynn, Killer Pain, Nikita and the mighty Yokozono.
