Rajkot, Oct 25 (UNI) Rajkot district Congress president Govindbhai Ranpariya fainted in the courtroom at Dhoraji while attending proceedings against him in a fast track court.

Ranpariya was taken to a private hospital at Dhoraji yesterday and was later shifted to a private hospital in Rajkot, official sources said.

The case against Ranpariya dates back to the year 2000 when he was vice president of the Jamkandorana taluka panchayat. He had allegedly beaten up a tatalthi official, V R Barasat.

Mr Barasat has lodged a complaint against Ranpariya but the latter had avoided court proceedings till now on medical grounds.

He was again summoned by the court on October 23, but Ranpariya's lawyer produced a medical certificate before the court according to which Ranpariya was a heart patient and needed rest. Despite this, however, Ranpariya had accompanied Union Minister of State for Home Shriprakash Jaiswal during the latter's tour of Rajkot, Morbi and Gondal.

The public prosecutor, while watching a local television channel, saw Ranpariya attending the minister's functions despite producing a medical certificate before the court. He took up the matter with the court following which the Dhoraji fast track court directed Ranpariya to remain present on October 24.

Ranpariya was left with no option but to produce himself before the court yesterday. When judge H J Joshi questioned him on the matter, Ranpariya was unable to reply and he just fainted.
