Bangalore, Oct 25: The Rail and Metro Business Group of public sector BEML Ltd has bagged the global tender for manufacture and supply of 156 standard gauge Stainless Steel Metro Cars from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC).

As a member of BEML, Mitsubishi, Rotem and Mitsubishi Electric consortium, BEML would supply the coaches for DMRC's second phase of operation for an order value of Rs.1144 crore. This order was the single largest contract BEML has bagged so far.

The Bangalore Complex of BEML would manufacture these Metro Cars and delivery was expected to be completed before the beginning of Common Wealth Games at New Delhi in 2010. The company was also looking forward for an additional order of 36 metro cars from DMRC, a company release said here today.

BEML's Rail and Metro Business Group had tied up with IL&FS for working as a Consortium to bag the Metro projects in the Country and it would supply rolling stock, spares and after sales service for Metro projects.

The combine was also exploring the possibility to work on the City Centre to International Airport segment of Metro project at both Hyderabad and Bangalore and possibly other projects on a BOOT basis. BEML was also exploring the avenues to establish a joint venture with an International player for manufacture of various types of rail bogies in India.

By taking the lead in the manufacture of standard gauge metro cars for the first time in the country, BEML was eyeing to capture the metro car market in the upcoming metro cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Cochin apart from tier-I cities.
