Railways lead in medal tally,lone National record on Day 2

Jamshedpur, Oct 24 (UNI) Babu Bhai of Services set up a new national record in men's 2000 mtr walk while the dominance of Railways athletes continued on the second day of the 47th National Open Athletics Championship at the J R D Tata sports complex here today.

Babu Bhai created the record clocking 1:23:40:0 surpassing Gurdev Singh's previous record of 1:25:21:70.

He was followed by his fellow team mate P S Jalan, who clocked 1:27:10:0 to bag silver while Maharashtra's Harvinder Singh grabbed the bronze.

In women's 100 mtr run, the Railways sprinters captured all the medals. Sharda N clocked 11.83 seconds for the gold while Poonam Tomar and Nidhi settled for silver and bronze with 12.03 seconds each.

The men's 100 M sprint, however, saw Services sprinter Sameer Moin clinched the gold with 10.53 seconds while Jagdish Basak of All India Petroleum Sports Control Board (AIPSCB) and Vilas Nilgund of Railways got silver and bronze timing 10.57 seconds and 10.59 seconds respectively.

Railways sprinters showed their supremacy in the 400 M in both the men's and women's events by pocketing gold medals. While Bibin Mathew clocked 47.55 seconds in the men's event, Geetha ran in 54.71 seconds to bag gold in the women's event.

The silver and the bronze in men's event went to S K Mortaza of Services (47.68 S) and Sriniwas Rao of Railways (47.94 S) respectively.

In the women's event Mandeep Kaur of ONGC and Tintu Luka of Kerala got silver and bronze clocking 55.33 and 55.76 seconds respectively.

Women's Hammer Throw event gold also went to Railways as Ritu Rani threw 55.94 M while Archana and Phulpati of AIPSB clinched silver and bronze with 54.69 M and 50.55 M respectively.
