New Delhi, Oct 24 (UNI) Stressing that terrorism continues to be one of the major challenges the country is facing, Defence Minister A K Antony today urged the Armed Forces to upgrade their capabilities to counter the threat posed by terrorists in the fast-changing world of technology.
''As terrorists constantly modernise their communication network, there is an urgent need to continuously upgrade our own capabilities to successfully counter the threat posed by them,'' Mr Antony said in his address at the Combined Commanders Conference here.
''In this context, it must be said that the overall situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast has shown steady signs of improvement,'' he added.
He also stressed the need for carefully monitoring the international environment and formulating flexible response options to emerging situations with the change in nature and scope of trans-border threats.
''As we develop as a regional and an economic superpower, our role and responsibilities are bound to increase too,'' he said.
Pointing out that technology had significantly reduced response timings at every level, he said the need of the hour was to change mindsets, in tune with the changing times--where transparency and fairness were the buzzwords.
He urged the Armed Forces to ensure that the financial powers, delegated from the Defence Ministry to the Services Headquarters, were put to the best use.
''Jointness and integration is not merely a desire, but an urgent need of the hour. It is a process that is destined to grow. Synergy can produce only better results than individual efforts,'' he said.
