Chennai, Oct 24 (UNI) Coming two days after a spectacular felicitation and a award of Rs 10 lakhs from the All India Chess Federation(AICF), Super Grand Master Viswanathan Anand today received the cheque for Rs 25 lakh as reward from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the state secretariat here for winning the world title for the second time, last month.
The Tamil Nadu government had announced the cash award soon after Anand won the world championship title in Mexico on September 29, for bringing glory to India and Tamil Nadu from where Anand hails, in particular.
Anand was accompanied by his wife Aruna, while Mr Karunanidhi's senior cabinet colleague and Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy, Information Minister Paruthi Illamvazhuthi, Local Administration and rural development minister M K Stalin, Tamil Nadu sports minister T P M Moideen Khan and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDATN) Secretary Atulya Misra and Chief Secretary L K Tripathi were among those who were present on the occasion.
A visibily elated Anand later told newspersons that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had honoured him in a fitting manner when he had won the world crown for the first time in the year 2000 in Tehran. The state government had on that occasion felicitated him and giftd him a High Income Group apartment in the SAF Games village.
Anand also observed that there is no truth in the argument that only a few select sports were attracting sponsorship, adding sponsors were coming forward to support all sports in which our sportspersons excelled.
Anand said the Chief Minister had informed him that his government was bringing out a scheme,'' to develop and encourage chess in rural areas.
'' I assured him that I would do every bit of what I can to support this sheme'', Anand revealed.
