Heavy rain causes concern to farmers

Thanjavur, Oct 24 (UNI) Heavy rain lasheing the Cauvery Delta Regions of Thanjavur, Tiruvavur and Nagappattinam districts since Monday evening have submerged thousands of acres of paddy crop in several parts of these districts and the water logged is causing concern to farmers.

The continuous rain fall has also affected normal life in many of these districts, particularly in rural areas. All canals in the delta area meant to drain off excess water into sea were full. PWD authorities have reduced the release of water from Mettur Reservoir since yesterday into the Cauvery, Vennar and GH canal to the minimum of 3,000 cusecs.

Already transplantaion of Samba and Thaladi paddy crops was more than 75 per cent complete. The remaining one plantation was expected to be completed before end of this month.
