Chennai, Oct 24 (UNI) Members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) today staged a protest demonstration here against the desecration of the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar, at Avaniyapuram in Madurai yesterday.
The volunteers, led by their Thol Thirumavalavan, shouted slogans, demanding immediate action against the miscreants who had desecrated the statue.
Mr Thirumavalavan said desecration of statues of Dr Ambedkar had become a routine in the state and demanded that the DMK Government take stern action against those involved in the incident.
Stating this was an attempt to greate communal tension, the Dalit leader said the government should not hesitate to invoke the Goondas Act against these anti-social elements.
The government should crush these forces with an iron hand to maintain law and order in the state, he said.
Similar protests were organised by a group of advocates and members of the Dalit Sena, led by its state unit leader Palanimuthu.
Members of the Revolutionary students union resorted to a road blockade, bringing traffic to a halt for about an hour in North Chennai.
