Kallyanpur, Karnataka, Oct 23 (UNI) For the first time in the history of Karnataka, Kallyanpur Village in Udupi district has been selected for a 10-day pre-Republic Day Camp from November 12 to 21, NSS Regional Centre Program Adviser Dr H S Suresh said today.
Talking to newsmen here, he said that a total of 210 NSS students from six states-Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar, Kerala, Lakshdweep besides Karnataka including 160 forming the marching contingent and remaining 40 forming cultural contingent would participate in the camp.
He said that for the first time four students and an officer from Lakshadweep are participating in the camp.
He said that the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had sanctioned Rs 4.89 lakh for conduct of the camp.
Dr Suresh said that during the Camp 30 NSS volunteers would be selected from marching and cultural contingent to participate in Republic Day Camp at New Delhi.
Similar pre-RD camps were also being organized at Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Bhopal.
He said that the Regional Centre was also organizing 16 Workshops in the state this year to train 1016 NSS volunteers in life skills.
Of the total 27 lakh NSS volunteers, 2.68 lakh are from Karnataka.
Despite huge demand for trained NSS volunteers in the country, only 15 per cent of the total student's strength was participating in NSS activities. In view of shortage of NSS volunteers, the Regional Centre had also taken up steps to promote self financed NSS units in the educational institutions to meet the demand. It had also proposed to set 100 such self financed units in the state during the current year, he added.
The Camp would be inaugurated by the Union Minister for Labour Oscar Fernandes on November 12.
