Madurai, Oct 23 (UNI) The city police have banned performing of popular folk dance 'Karagaattam' and other such dances to the tunes of film songs within city limits, with immediate effect.

Deputy Commissioner of Police R Ramarajan told newspersons here last night that the decision was taken at a review meeting of police officials to prevent provocative conduct and violent activities that arise after such performances in the name of cultural events, which take place mostly at nights in temples.

However, the ban would not affect performance of classical dances like Bharathanatiyam and Kuchipudi, though a time limit of 2200 hrs had been set for the same.

Mr Ramarajan said the ban followed a multitude of complaints from devotees and public in the recent days about obscene movements being practiced by some woman dancers.

The ban would also help curb immoral sexual activities and assaults, he said, citing the recent example of a woman folk dancer Sathya (36) being killed by her fans at her house at Pasumalai in the district.
