Guwahati, Oct 23 (UNI) After 'drumming' its way into the Guinness World Records last autumn, Shillong is ready to 'string' into the record books once again.

The Meghalaya capital city would see the assembly of record number of guitarists on October 26 in the 'largest guitar ensemble' as the musicians would attempt to enter the Guinness records of most number of guitarists performing together.

Shillong had hosted the 'largest drum ensemble' last year when 7,800 drummers had performed at the same time and created a new world record.

The event was hosted by the Meghalaya Tourist Development Forum (MTDF), a group consisting of tour operators, hoteliers, transport operators and citizens for promoting tourism in the state.

MTDF general secretary Aiban S Mawkhroh said, ''More than 500 guitarists have already registered from Shillong alone and we have received innumerable enquiries. Though we are targeting 2000 guitarists, we expect more than 2500 to arrive.'' The present record stands at 1721 guitarists from Kansas City, USA, performing the rock classic 'Smoke on the Water' on June 4 this year. Another attempt at touching the record would be made on November 4 at London, which had kept the MTDF organizers on toes to ensure that Shillong confirms its place in the record books comfortably. Mr Mawkhroh informing that Bob Dylan's 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' would be performed at Shillong during the record bid and rehearsals would start from today.

The organizers have also announced a special cash prize of Rs 20,000 and a trophy for the largest contingent of over 100 people who participate in the record bid under a single banner.

The MTDF general secretary said that guitarist from outside North east have also been invited and are expected to participate.

''Besides, we will have rock bands performing live immediately after the record attempt,'' he added.

As part of the Autumn Festival, a vintage car pageant would be held on October 28, with the Model Ford T car used in the film 'Gandhi' as the main attraction. Besides cars from host state Meghalaya, Assam and other NE states would also participate in the pageant. Cultural shows, traditional food festival and various local sports would be the other highlights of the festival.
