Five nabbed, one surrender, abduction bid foiled in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 23 (UNI) Security forces arrested five people while villagers foiled an abduction bid and an ultra surrendered across the Kashmir valley overnight, an official spokesman said today.

Four armed men tried to kidnap a local, Khurshid Ahmad Wagay, from his residence at Fries Dab near Charar-e-Sharief town in central Kashmir district of Badgam.

However, the villagers saw Wagay being taken away and chased away the kidnappers, thus averting the abduction bid.

While fleeing from the spot, the armed men lobbed a hand grenade towards the villagers, police added. The grenade did not explode.

A live grenade was found in the temple town of Mattan in Anantnag district of south Kashmir today. The hand grenade was found lying at Kehribal in Mattan town, about three km from the historic Sun temple of Martand, in Anantnag district.

A bomb disposal squad of the state police later destroyed the grenade without causing any damage.

A militant surrendered before the authorities in south Kashmir district of Pulwama today. Wasim Akram alias Setha, a resident of Safanagri in Zainapora area of Pulwama district surrendered before the authorities at the local police station.

A defence spokesman said 5 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) launched a search operation in Ganderbal general area following specific information and apprehended four over ground workers.

They were identified as Manzoor Ahmed Khan, Younus Baniya, Mohamed Iqbal Baniya and forest guard Gulam Mohammad Baniya.

The four were active over ground workers of the Hizbul Mujahideen and involved in aiding, abetting and providing information of the movement of security forces to militants. They were later handed over to Ganderbal police station for further investigations.

Police also arrested Abdul Majeed Dar alias Bombar Khan, a former Hizb militant and at present associated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), near Chogal petrol pump along with a scooter in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara.

On search of his scooter, police seized one pistol, one magazine, seven rounds and two hand grenades. Police also seized three UBGL grenades, 47 AK rounds, 27 Kakacope rounds and four stamps from the house of Ghulam Hassan at Nagri Malpora in the same area on his instance, the spokesman added.
