New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) For emerging as the new World Chess Champion, Indian Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand will be felicitated by Union Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar in a programme at Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu.
The Sport Minister in a letter to chess wizard Anand expressed his regrets for not being able to join the function being held in Chennai this evening for honouring him.
Mr Aiyar, who was not keeping well for the past few days, in his letter said, ''I have to deny myself the opportunity of joining millions of my countrymen and women in congratulating you on your utterly remarkable achievement of emerging as the World's No.1 Chess Champion. For India, it is an achievement without parallel or precedent.'' The Minister also said, ''As I am the Member of Parliament for Mayiladuthurai, I join all my constituents in felicitating ourselves on your having been born and brought up amongst us before you went into the wide world to secure fame and glory for our country. I trust we can make up for my not being with you this evening by organising a felicitation in your honour in Mayiladuthurai.'' Expressing regrets for not being present in Chennai for today's function, Mr Aiyar said, ''My inability to be present on the occasion does not diminish one whit our pride and gratitude for the excellence of your achievement.'' Anand was given a royal reception both in Delhi and then in Chennai after his exploits in the World Chees Championship in Mexico.
