Chandigarh, Oct 22 (UNI) The procurement of Paddy picked up pace in Punjab as the government agencies and private millers procured more than 82 lakh tonnes of paddy in the state till last evening.
According to an official spokesperson, out of the total procurement, government agencies had procured 65.88 lakh tonnes of paddy, which was 79.5 per cent of the total procurement till date whereas millers had lifted 16.94 lakh tonnes (20.5 per cent) of paddy.
Till October 21, Pungrain had procured 16.28 lakh tonnes 24.7 per cent) whereas Markfed procured 15.51 lakh tonnes (23.5 per cent). Punsup procured 16.98 lakh tonnes (25.8 per cent), PSWC procured 9.06 lakh tonnes (13.8 per cent) whereas PAIC was able to procure 7.32 lakh tonnes (11.1 per cent) of paddy. The Central government agency FCI had been able to procure 71,811 tonnes, which was just 1.1 per cent.
The spokesperson added that Ferozepur district with 11.06 lakh tonnes of procurement was leading in procurement operations whereas Ludhiana district with 9.93 lakh tonnes of procurement was at second slot and Patiala district with 8.13 lakh tonnes of procurement was at third position.
He said that to ensure smooth procurement and timely payments to the farmers during Kharif Season 2007-08, the state government had already got a cash credit limit of Rs 7,439 crore sanctioned from Reserve Bank of India for the month of October.
The spokesperson said that the state government had already issued instructions to all agencies to release payments to the farmers.

The State Government has set up 1,544 procurement centres and activated its total machinery to ensure smooth procurement of paddy, the spokesperson added.
