Ahmedabad, Oct 22 (UNI) Calling for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's resignation for his ''failure'' to provide security to the people of the state, Leader of Opposition in the assembly and senior Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia today demanded imposition of central rule in the state.

Mr Modhwadia, in a statement, said Mr Modi must resign due to his failure in providing security to the people.

''The state government is responsible to ensure safety and security of the people and it must fulfil it. They (Modi) must resign, in case, they are unable to ensure safety and security of the people,'' he said and added that President's rule must be imposed in the state.

He also demanded that the investigation into the Surat incident in which 15 vehicles were gutted in a fire in a parking area close to the venue of Mr Modi's public function here on Monday night be handed over to the CBI.

The Opposition leader alleged that the incident, which occurred after the Chief Minister's meeting, was an attempt to create an ''atmosphere of sympathy'' in favour of Mr Modi, as such incidents had also occurred during the 2002 state assembly elections.

He said the Chief Minister had realised that the countdown for his regime had begun and hence he was alleging the involvement of Union government in the incident.
