Chennai, Oct 22 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government will cancel the driving licence of those found involved in accidents under the influence of alcohol, Transport Minister K N Nehru told the State Assembly today.

Replying to a special call attention motion tabled by K Arumugam (PMK), he said the Government was taking steps to prevent drunken driving.

''The licence will be cancelled for a period of six months for the first offence. If the concerned person makes second offence despite the warning, the licence would be cancelled permanently,'' he said, and added that such stringent measures would help reduce accidents due to drunken driving.

Though there were addition of about ten lakh vehicles every year, leading to spurt in accident rates, the Government was taking all steps to prevent road accidents by laying new roads, repairing existing roads and inducting new buses in its fleet.
