AP CM approves guidelines for appointment of Khazis

Hyderabad, Oct 22 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today approved the guidelines for the appointment of Khazis in the State and Government would finalise it soon in consultation with the Muslim MLAs prior submitting to the court in the month end.

Dr Reddy held a review meeting today with Minorities Welfare Minister Shabbir Ali and the department officials. The issue was related to the appointment of Khazis pertaining to Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy. The new appointments would be taken care of by the District Collectors and they would fix the parameters or the area of the operation of Khazis.

There are 112 Sunni Khazis and 120 Shia Shia Khazis as of now and the number would be increased soon. The Chief Minister also approved the guidelines for the appointment of additional Khazis, but the final shape was yet to emerge. The Minister and the officials would have a meeting with the Muslim MLAs and come to a final conclusion before handing over the report to the court for its approval.

The idea was to put a Khazi for a population of 50,000 Muslims or a radius of 50 kilometres area. After framing the guidelines in consultation with the MLAs, the same would be circulated to the District Collectors after the court approval for the appointment of Khazis, as per the 1885 Act.
