Deputy Mayor Bajwa dies of head injuries; cremated

New Delhi, Oct 21 (UNI) Deputy Mayor S S Bajwa, admitted to the Apollo hospital yesterday in critical condition after he fell down from the terrace of his house in East Delhi, died today, family sources said.

He was 52 and is survived by his wife and two sons.

Bajwa fell from the first floor of his house in Savita Vihar yesterday morning when a sudden appearance of a few monkeys there resulted in him staving off the simians. Bajwa was admitted to Apollo hospital with serious head and other injuries.

He was in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and put on a ventilator. His end came in the morning.

Later, his mortal remains were consigned to flames at Nigambodh Ghat at 1600 hrs.

Present at the cremation were Delhi Lt Governor Tejender Khanna, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra, BJP leader and former union Minister Vijay Goel, leaders of the Delhi BJP, including state party chief Harshvardhan, Leader of the opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly Jagdish Mukhi, leader of the MCD House Subhash Arya, Chairman of the Standing Committee Vijender Gupta, several BJP and Congress councillors.

Before the funeral service, the body of Bajwa was taken in a procession from his house in Savita vihar near Anand Vihar through ring Road to Niagmbodh Ghat.

All MCD institutions, except hospitals, will remain closed tomorrow as a mark of respect to Bajwa, the MCD spokesperson said.
