Mumbai, Oct 21 (UNI) Kerala fiery speedster Sreesanth, who is known for his aggression on the field, today pledged his support for a social cause of anti-female foeticide campaign 'BETI'.
BETI is the initiative of Anu Ranjan, wife of cricket commentator Shashi Ranjan, launched to curb the growing trend of female foeticide within the country.
''I come from Kerela where there is 100 percent literacy. I am a Mallu, I have two sisters and I respect my mom. It is not an obligation, everyone should take responsibility, that is why I have decided to support 'BETI','' said pacer Sreesanth while speaking to reporters at the ITC Grand Maratha here.
Endorsing his support for the Indian Television Academy's (ITA) celebrity T20 cricket match organised for the cause of BETI, to be held on October 28, he said ''We should send out a message.'' Speaking about the stupendous victory of the Indians over the Aussies in T20 Future Cup at Brabourne Stadium here last evening, Sreesanth said ''It feels great as we worked very hard and are enjoying the fruits. But now, we will have to work even harder. We are ready for the match with Pakistan.'' About his alleged aggression on the field, he said ''Even though I am known for my aggression on the field, off the field I am a very relaxed and normal person. I will channelise my aggression in a positive way for this cause.'' Shashi Ranjan said ''In a country where cricketers are revered, it makes a big difference when they endorse a cause and we are happy to receive his support. The other celebrities who have supported us in the past are Shabana Azmi and Priyanka Chopra and now its Sreesanth and Shaad Randhawa.'' ''Using stars from TV and other fields, we plan to spread awareness on the rampant cases of female foeticide which is causing gender imbalance in our society,'' he said.
Some very disturbing statistics reveal that for every 1000 boys there are only 850 girls. In addition, there is human trafficking in states like Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, where women are selling themselves for a meagre sum of Rs 100. They end up becoming sex workers, Shashi said.
The cricket match will have two teams namely TCL and TCCI, which will include TV stars like Manoj Biddvai, Sharad Kelkar, Bakhtiyaar Irani, Karan Wahi, Amit Behl, Aditya Narayan, Abhijeet Sawant, Gaurav Chopra, Shaan, Manish Goswami and many others.
While the commentators will include BIG 92.7 FM RJ Vrajesh Hirjee and Archana Jani, Ravi Behl, Tanaaz Currim, Manini De, Suresh Menon and Manoj Joshi among others.
The cheerleaders will be Roopali Ganguly, Poonam Gulati and Priyanka Bassi to name a few, he added.
