Distcoms asked to maintain streetlights

New Delhi, Oct 19 (UNI) Concerned over lack of maintenance of street lights in the national capital, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today directed all the three power Distribution Companies to submit certificates stating the status of the streetlights in their areas.

The MCD has also been asked to maintain their high mastlights installed in public parks.

''Their is need for urgent action as certain important roads have presently been gripped by darkness... Most of the high mastlights are also not functioning,'' Ms Dikshit said after reviewing the present position of streetlighting in Delhi at a high-level meeting.

''All of then have been asked to submit their action report within 10 days to the Department of Power,'' she added.

Ms Dikshit has issued instructions for maintenance and proper upkeep of all streetlights in the Capital-city to ensure that cent per cent lights remain functional during the festive season.

The Chief Minister asked Power Minister A K Walia to write to all MLAs and Members of Parliament to render their cooperation in making all the streetlights functional.

''They would be requested to bring the non-functional streetlights to the notice of the Power Minister.

The MCD is also being requested to take care of their high mast lights installed in public parks.

She exhorted officers to undertake maintenance and inspection exercise of streetlights and work in tandem so that all public roads in Delhi were well lit before Diwali.
