Tsunami-hit islanders in Andaman to get foodgrains under RGRRP

Port Blair, Oct 18 (UNI) As special dispensation the Rural Development Ministry has ordered revalidation of 2100 MT of rice to the tsunami affected people of remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands under Rajiv Gandhi Tsunami Relief&Rehabilitation Package.

Earlier, Lt. Governor Lt. General (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh, had taken up the matter regarding revalidation of period for lifting of foodgrains allotted under Special Component of SGRY to tsunami affected people of A&N Islands with the Union Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Sharad Pawar and subsequently with Union Minister of Rural Development, Mr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh at personal level.

Accordingly, the Regional Office of Food Corporation of India (FCI), Port Blair, informed that they will start distribution of the foodgrains to the beneficiaries under Rajiv Gandhi Tsunami Relief&Rehabilitation Package (RGRRP) of the Islands from today, official sources said today.

Political parties in Andaman and Nicobar Islands were demanding revalidation of the period for lifting of foodgrains allotted for the tsunami beneficiaries.
