By Staff

New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) Riding on Ritu Rani's six goal blitz, defending champion Sri Guru Nanak Public (SGNP) School, Shahabad(Haryana) trounced Govt School, Bariatu (Ranchi) 9-0 to retain the Nehru Junior girls hockey title here today.

The final of the 14th edition of the tournament turned out to be a no contest as Shahabad girls outplayed their rivals in all departments of the game to lead 3-0 at half time.

Seldom the title clash in this tournament has been so hopelessly one side as it was this afternoon, with Shahabad girls spearheaded by Ritu Rani reducing their rival's challenge to shambles.

Ranchi girls simply seemed awestruck by the ferocity of their rivals' attack and by the time they could gather their wits, it was all over.

Ritu Rani set the ball roling for the winners scoring two goals in a space of two minutes (7th and 9th) and then Sandeep Kaur converted a penalty corner in the 26th minutes to make it 3-0. But it rained goals in the second session with Ritu slamming four more (33rd, 43rd, 50th and 60th) and Ramandeep Kaur (38th) and Meenakshi(46th) chipping in with a goal each.

Earlier Padma Raje School (Gwalior) outplayed Govt School, Kairon (Amritsar) 5-2 to take the third place.

Kavita (2), Raina Yadav, Poonam Rani, Jameela Bano (One each) scored for the winners. Ramandeep Kaur (sr) and Harwinder Kaur chipped in a goal each to reduce the margin for the losers.

SGNP School received a cheque of Rs 96,000 for their winning effort, while Ranchi team earned Rs 64,000 for finishing runners up.

Padma Raje School had to content with Rs 30,000.
