SDMs appointed as CMPOs to Prohibit child marriage

Chandigarh, Oct 18 (UNI) Chandigarh administration has appointed Sub Divisional Magistrates (SDM) as Child Marriage Prohibition Officers (CMPO) for exercising the powers and discharge of duties in their respective areas under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006.

As per the notification issued by UT Home Secretary Krishna Mohan, SDM (Central), SDM (South) and SDM (East) will be CMPOs for their respective areas.

CMPOs would have powers and duties to prevent solemnisation of child marriages by taking such action as they may deem fit. They would collect evidence for the effective prosecution of persons contravening the provisions of this Act. They would advise either individual cases or counsel the residents of the locality generally not to indulge in promoting, helping, aiding or allowing the solemnisation of child marriages. They would also help in creating awareness of the evil which results from child marriages. CMPOs would also sensitise the community on the issue of child marriages.
