Punjab Transport Dept to introduce AC buses

Chandigarh, Oct 18 (UNI) The Punjab Government is planning to introduce low fare AC buses with an aim to reduce number of private vehicles and strengthen the public transport in the state.

Presiding over a state level meeting of transport department here today, Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal said that the state's new transport policy focused on introducing low fare AC buses throughout the state to encourage people to switch over from private vehicles to public transport. He said that with this measure the congestion of private vehicles on highways would reduce resulting in lower accident rate.

Expressing concern over increasing number of vehicles in the state, he said that this could be controlled by providing efficient, cost effective, comfortable and people friendly public transport system in the state.

The Transport Minister further added that the state wants to make the transport policy a complete success so that other states could replicate this model transport policy in their own state.

To strengthened the vigilance wing to check the leakage of revenue, the Minister asked the department to launch a special campaign for recovery of arrears of road taxes, compounding fee and other taxes.
