Chennai, Oct 18 (UNI) A CBI Court today convicted a former top Central Excise official, his wife and father in a disproportinate asset case.
In the order, the Special Judge for CBI Cases in Madurai sentenced Former Joint Commissioner of Central Excise Tiruchirapalli, Mr V Jayaraman, his wife Waheeda Jayaraman and Father P Velu to various prison terms and imposed fines.
Mr Jayaraman was sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) and asked to pay Rs 50,000 as fine.
Ms Waheeda Jayaraman and Mr Velu were slapped with a year's RI and fined Rs 10,000 each.
The case was Mr Jayaraman acquired assets, including three houses, two cars, fixed deposits, shares and bank balance worth Rs 60.02 lakh between 1998 and 2006.
The properties were acquired in the names of Mr Jayaraman, his wife and father.
Investigations showed Mr Jayaraman to be in possession of disproportinate assets to the tune of Rs 45.62 lakh and his wife and father abetted him in the acquisition of the assets.
A charge sheet was filed by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the CBI on 31 May 2006 in the court under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.
