Conduct comprehensive scientific study on SSCP: Expert

Kochi, Oct 18 (UNI) Eminent scientist and environmentalist Dr E P Yashodharan today called for a comprehensive scientific study on the feasibilty and viability of the proposed Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP).

Inaugurating a national seminar on ''Possible Impacts of Sethusamudram Project along Kerala Coast, A Scientific Appraisal'' at CUSAT here, Dr Yashodharan said '' the project is chalked out on the basis of old maritime needs without taking into consideration the modern demands. It should be reconsidered after a careful study.'' Dr Yashodharan, who is the executive vice-president of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, said the project would throw thousands of fishermen into unemployment as it would deplete the fish wealth of the region.
