Chennai, Oct 18 (UNI) A Bill to prohibit collection of capitation fees by self-financing professional colleges in Tamil Nadu was introduced in the State Assembly today.
The Bill, seeking to amend the Tamil Nadu Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Collection of Capitation Fee) Act, 1992, was introduced by Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy.
Once it was passed, the Bill would come into force immediately.
The statement of objects and reasons of the Bill said the Supreme Court, in its judgement in the Islamic Academy of Education Vs State of Karnataka and other cases, had directed the State Governments to constitute a committee headed by a retired Judge of the High Court for fixation of fee for students admitted to unaided private professional educational institutions. In pursuance of the directive, the State Government had constituted such a committee.
''In order to make the collection of fee over and above the fee fixed by the said committee an offence, the Government has decided to amend Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Collection of Capitation Fee) Act, 1992, sutiably,'' it said.
