Dhaka, Oct 18 (UNI) Thousands of Hindus in Bangladesh will invoke Goddess Durga, daughter of the majestic Himalayas, by offering Mahasaptami puja across the country today.
The five-day-long Durga puja, the largest festival of Hindus in Bangladesh, began yesterday with Mahashashthi puja.
Devotees attended the puja at some 20,000 mandaps set up all across the country.
Leaders of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad and Mahanagar Sarbojoneen Puja Committee said people from all walks of life will gather at puja mandaps from today onwards as the main attraction of the Durga Puja begins from Mahasaptami.
'Ansars' (Volunteers) have been deployed at the mandaps while Rapid Action Battalion, Bangladesh Rifles and police will patrol the puja venues for ensuring security of the visitors.
Monitoring cells have also been formed to help Hindus observe their biggest annual religious festival.
Yesterday, Bangladesh President Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed greeted Hindus on the occasion.
In his message, the President said Durga Puja was an indivisible part of the Bengali culture though it was the main religious festival of Hindus.
Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed said people of all faith have been living in harmony in the country for ages and every achievement, success and glory belong to all of them.
