Agartala, Oct 17 (UNI) The Tripura government today urged its Assam counterpart to arrest the transporters responsible for the death of seven migrant labourers due to suffocation in two buses on way to Agartala from Guwahati recently.
A leading NGO today submitted a nine-point charter of demands related to the poor transport system to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
Transport Minister Manik Dey said the commissioner of the department had already spoken to his Assam counterpart yesterday and requested him to arrest the accused employees and owners of the transport agencies.
He, however, informed that the state government had ordered two separate inquiries into the incident and taken some steps to contain overloading as well as to ensure passengers safe and comfort journey.
Meanwhile, a leading NGO of the state held the state government responsible for the incident and demanded to take action against the transport and police officials who allowed the vehicles plying in the state with excess passengers besides, the transport agencies.
It demanded the state government to compel the accused travel agencies and the persons, who had brought the labourers illegally from Jharkhand, and to pay due compensation to the victims' family.
