Hyderabad, Oct 17 (UNI) India came from behind to score a 3-1 victory over Brazil in a nail-biting group league match and storm into the semi-finals of the men's volleyball competition of the 4th Military World Games here today.
In a match which was rendered a virtual quarter-final, after both sides recorded one win and one loss each in the four-team Pool B league, the hosts began on a wrong note conceding the first set to the South Americans only to script a remarkable fight back to post a 23-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-17 win in front of vociferous home supporters at KVBR Stadium in Yousufguda here.
Brazil began as slightly better team in the first set, but the Indian caught up their opponents at 14-14 only to see it slip to 21-24. Even though the Indians won two consecutive points after that, they lost the set 23-25.
Then began the fight back and the Indians led the Brazilians throughout the second set. The hosts were 12-8 midway and the pattern went on till they took it 25-17 with Indian hit men foxing rival blockers to great effect to score points.
The crucial third set was a thriller, though it started with India taking the early lead. The South Americans then pulled together to make it 16-16. From then on, the two sides were not separated by more than one point till it reached 24-24 and the deuce. The Indians showed nerves of steel to win the deuce and the set 26-24.
Smelling victory, having taken a 2-1 lead, the Indians went for the kill and raced to 13-8 midway in the fourth set and pocketed it 25-17 and the match 3-1.
With two wins from three outings, India have qualified for the last four from Pool B along with China who have also won both of their two games while Korea Republic and Qatar had qualified from Pool A.
Yesterday, India beat Latvia 25-17, 25-19, 25-16.
