New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) The Congress today dubbed ''cosmetic'' the transfer of eight top police and administrative officers in Gujarat as ordered by the Election Commission ahead of the Assembly polls in the State this year-end.
''These are very cosmetic changes,'' Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told reporters here.
He said more officers should have been transfered as there was a large number of complaints about the possible misuse of the Government machinery during the elections.
''The EC should think about this deeply,'' he said.
On the other hand, the BJP, which is ruling the State, has expressed displeasure over the transfer directive, and wanted to know the reason behind the move.
BJP general secretary Arun Jaitely, who is also in charge of Gujarat elections, had alleged that the Commission had taken the action merely on the basis of complaints of the State Congress.
It had become almost a fashion with the Election Commission to order such transfers in any State going to the polls without assigning any reason, he said in Ahmedabad.
The Election Commission had on October 15 ordered the transfer of eight officers, including Gujarat Director General of Police P C Pande.
Mr Pande came under a cloud over the post-Godhra riots in 2002 when he was Ahmedabad Police Commissioner.
