Patna, Oct 17 (UNI) In order to provide safe drinking water to the people of Bihar, the state government has decided to install hand pumps and water tanks only after checking the purity of water.
Bihar Public Health and Engineering Department(PHED) minister Prem Kumar here today said the technocrats of the department had been asked to test the purity of water before installation of hand pumps and construction of water tanks in the selected areas.
He said 2.75 lakh sources of water were being tested for their purity over 14 parametres fixed for the purpose.
Mr Kumar reiterated the governments committment in providing safe drinking water to the state by 2009 and disclosed that the engineers and others engaged in the work had been instructed to meet the target. Otherwise stringent action would be initiated against those guilty of delaying the project. He also stated that steps were being taken to ensure that the existing water tanks of the state were cleaned.
