Rae Bareli, UP, Oct 16 (UNI) Amid uncertainty over the fate of the Indo-US nuclear deal in the face of Left opposition, AICC president Sonia Gandhi today stressed the need to exploit alternate sources of energy.
Addressing a gathering here after dedicating the 220 KV sub-station for her parliamentary constituency of Rae Bareli and inaugurating the 220 kv Unchahar-Rae Bareli inter-connection at village Umra Chakdadar, Ms Gandhi said as the power scenario in the country was not satisfactory, there was a need to exploit additional sources of power.
Ms Gandhi, however, did not mention nuclear energy nor the prevailing tiff with the Left front. But political observers in the state capital felt the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson was indicating at the need to exploit alternative sources, including nuclear energy.
She said the UPA government at the Centre was working towards electrifying all villages in the country. ''A total of 1733 villages in Rae Bareli would be electrified by the year 2008,'' she added.
The Umra village sub-station is the first 220 KV capacity unit in Rae Bareli and would connect the district directly to the 1050 MW Unchahar power plant. The dedication of the sub-station would also ensure better power supply to the VVIP district.
Mentioning about the various self help groups operating in the districts of Rae Bareli and Sultanpur, Ms Gandhi said Amethi MP and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi would lead a 'white revolution' in the two districts in which he was taking a personal interest.
''Thirty milk chilling plants are operating in the district where villagers send 50,000 litres of milk daily...the plan is to increase the milk supply to 1 lakh liters a day,'' she said.
During the first day of her three day visit today, Ms Gandhi also inaugurated nine roads totalling to 12 km at the Churva border here.
Later, she visited the Kundanganj and Harchandpur milk chilling plants and interacted with members of volunteer organisations.
Before dedicating the sub-station, the AICC president also inaugurated the Feroze Gandhi Instiutute of Engineering and Technology. The students of the institute will get e-lessons from the IIT-Kanpur faculty via video conferencing.
After holding meeting with local Congress workers and attending several meetings tomorrow, she will inaugurate 18 roads under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna at Gaura Ubani.
On the concluding day, she will inaugurate Raja Dal Park at Dalmau and later attend a health Mela at Lalganj before leaving for New Delhi.
