Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, Oct 16 (UNI) Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder-leader S Ramadoss today led about 20,000 villagers in an agitation in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), demanding adequate compensation to those who provided land to NLC 50 years ago.
The agitators from 69 villages took out a procession from the NLC main arch to the corporate office and staged a dharna there.
Addressing the agitators, Dr Ramadoss said they wanted provision of alternate land or suitable compensation to those whose land was acquired, return of land left unused for the project and immediate employment to 3,000 apprentices.
He warned that if their demands were not met, they would embark on a picketing agitation soon. ''We are even ready to go to prison for the cause,'' he thundered, adding that the agitation would, however, be a non-violent one.
Finding fault with the parties that ruled the State and the Land Acquisition Act for the lapse, he called for an amendment to the Act as it was being misused to grab lands at a throwaway price.
Dr Ramadoss pointed to a Supreme Court judgment that all rehabilitation and resettlement facilities for the displaced should be completed before relocating.
Calling for immediate action as per dharma principles and not legally as the law itself was ''flawed'', he condemned the Karunanidhi Government for the problem.
