NCC Aizwal pip Sagarbanga School, Durgapur to win Subroto Cup

New Delhi, Oct 16 (UNI) Riding on a superb goal by forward M S Dawngzela, NCC Aizwal piped Sagarbanga School, Durgapur, 1-0 to win the title of Under-17 category in the Subroto Cup here today.

In a well contested final, Sagarbanga School have only thmselves to blame for losing the match as they dominated the procedings for most of the time.

Sagarbanga boys muffed four easy chances in the first half and paid the penalty. On the other hand, Aizwal school defended their citadel well and made several incisive forays into the rival territory to keep the Sagarbnga defenders busy.

The all important goal came in the 23rd minute before the final whistle when Sagarbanga defender Subankar Dey, in a bid to head off the ball slipped and fell over it on the top of the box with referee giving a free kick.

This was disputed by Dey who started arguing with the referee, and in the process received a yellow card.

M S Dawngzela' curling shot beat the defensive wall and despite defender Ram Malik's best effort to stop, ball went into the goal.

The Bengal boys launched all out attack for the equaliser but Aizwal players crowded their defence and held on to the lead.

The victory fetched the winners a cheque of Rs one lakh while the runners up received Rs 50,000.

Goa's Rosary School was awarded the Fair Play trophy.

Sagarbhanga's Ram Malik was declared the most promising player while Aizwal's Lalhlimpuia was declared the best player of the tournament.

Both received a Bajaj Kristal scooter each.
