Shillong, Oct 16 (UNI) Meghalaya government today reiterated its firm commitment to repair the deplorable road conditions along the National Highway-40 within two months.

State Public Work Department Minister Zenith M Sangma told the House that the government was aware of the deteriorating condition of the Guwahati-Shillong (GS) road due to unprecendented rains.

Making a sou-motu statement, Mr Sangma assured of possible steps to improve the national highway on an urgent basis.

Justifying the poor condition of the highway, the minister said the condition of the road had become deplorable mainly because the department did not recieve any sanctions from the government for carrying out maintenance and repair job during the last two years.

Mr Sangma informed the Assembly that the state government has entrusted the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) with developing the GS road into a four-lane highway.

The Shillong by-pass road has also been entrusted to the NHAI for developing it in two phases viz a two-lane by-pass in the first phase and four-lane by-pass in the second phase.
