Chavan claims grand double in Maharashtra Junior meet

Pune, Oct 16 (UNI) Jaganath Chavan of Sangli today claimed a grand double in the boys under-16 section in the Poona District Amateur Athletic Association (PDAAA)-hosted Maharashtra State Junior Athletic championship, which was concluded at the Pune Municipal Corporation's Baburao Sanas stadium here.

In the corresponding girls' events, Pranita Save of Mumbai Suburban District burnt the track to emerge the fastest girl by winning the glamorous 100 dash event to hog the concluding day's thunder.

Chavan, a well-built rustic lad, made Sangli district proud by capturing a gold each in the shot put and the discus throw events respectively to post a grand double.

He hurled the iron ball to clear a distance of 11.25 metres to get the better of his rivals Mohinesh Baria of Solapur who could clear 11.17 meters to take the silver while Aporva Joshi of Thane bagged the bronze with 10.48 metres.

Chavan then went on to win the gold in the discus event, sending the iron plate to a distance of 44.45 meters. Ashutosh Bhopale of Pune managed to throw it at 35.38 meters to be placed second, while Kamlesh Chaturvedi of Mumbai Suburban took the third slot with a throw of 34.75 meters.

Pranita Save, a slightly built lass from Mumbai Suburban District, produced a brilliant sprint to outwit the challenge of Shruti Hegde of Thane and Pooja Patil of Pune to win the 100 dash event clocking 12.7 seconds.

Hegde with a time of 12.9 seconds claimed the silver and Patil with 13.1 seconds bagged the bronze.

The boys 100 dash event was won by Mahendra Pawar of Aurangabad clocking 19.2 seconds, while Shrawan Bhoite of Thane took the silver with 11.5 seconds and the bronze was bagged by Gaurav Dutta of Nashik with 12.00 seconds.
