Bangkok, Oct 15 (UNI) The UN special envoy on Myanmar Mr Ibrahim Gambari held talks here this morning with Thai Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram on the situation in Myanmar on the first leg of a six-nation consultation process that will also take him to New Delhi.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Mr Gambari who was in Myanmar recently, said he was troubled by reports of arrests of dissidents in that country in the past few days.

''It runs counter to the spirit of mutual engagement between the UN and Myanmar,'' he said.

Mr Gambari was scheduled to meet with Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont later today.

He is also scheduled to travel to Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, India and China before starting another mission to Myanmar to help facilitate a political dialogue between the military regime in Naypyitaw and pro-democracy campaigners led by Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr Gambari said he had a confirmed invitation to return to Myanmar next month.
