Bhubaneswar, Oct 15 (UNI) The students of University College of Engineering(UCE), Burla, today called-off their agitation after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik assured them of giving clearance for society registration within a couple of days.
The society registration was a mandatory criteria for upgrading the UCE into a deemed university.
The UCE had applied for society registration in 2005. The government last year assured to make it a deemed university and accordingly the 2007 Industrial Policy Resolution had announced to upgrade the UCE into a deemed University.
However, the students went on a strike from October 4 as the government failed to give permission for the society registration even after two years of application.
The chief minister assured an eight-member delegation, led by the UCE Principal S K Sanyal, which called on him, that the clearance would be given in a couple of days after a no objection certificate from the Finance Department.
Industries Minister B B Harichandan told news persons here that the government was keen on upgrading the UCE into a Deemed University and said the Biju Patnaik University of Technology Act would be amended in the winter session of the assembly to facilitate it.
The government also agreed to comply with the students' demand to depute a team to the UCE to assess the infrastructure and fund required for the upgradation.
The chief minister also agreed to look into the demands of the students to transfer 300 acres of land lying close to the UCE to the college which would be needed for the upgradation.
