Ambala, Oct 15 (UNI) Special CBI Judge R K Saini today deferred the hearing on the bail plea of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh, who failed to appear in the court, to October 20.
The Dera chief, facing two cases of murder conspiracy and a rape case, had earlier appeared before the court on October 4 under direction from the Punjab and Haryana High Court when the CBI judge had fixed the date of hearing for today.
The judge today heard the arguments of the CBI and the counsels of the Dera Chief before fixing the next hearing.
During the arguments, which continued for over an hour, the CBI lawyers pleaded that the Dera Chief should have been present personally in the court today. They argued that his presence in the court was necessary because it would have been difficult for the police to take him in custody in case his bail application was rejected.
Moreover, the Baba was accused of heinous crime of murder and rape. He had not filed any application for exemption from personal appearance, they contended.
They argued that he should have been present in the court in view of the directions from the High court.
However, the counsel of dera chief arguing that Baba's presence was not necessary. After hearing arguments from both sides, the CBI Judge fixed October 20.
