Harale, Gaikwad annex honours in Maharashtra Junior meet

Pune, Oct 15 (UNI) Promising Sunil Harale of Pune and Chhaya Gaikwad of Ahmednagar dominated the boys and girls under-16 walk events respectively to capture a gold each on the opening day of the Maharashtra State Junior Athletic championship, which got underway at the Pune Municipal Corporation's Baburao Sanas Stadium here today.

Athletically built, Harale, a Standard XIth student who hails from Satara and represents Krida Probhodini, had a cake walk and won the gold in the 5 kilometre walk event, clocking 25 minutes and 59.9 seconds.

While Riaz Pathan of Jalna claimed the silver and Pravin Patil of Sangli the bronze.

Harale had won a silver medal in the West Zone Junior Athletic championship held at Bhopal recently.

In the corresponding girls section, Chhaya Gaikwad also had no challenger and won the 3 km walk event in a time of 17 minutes and 47.2 seconds.

Rhoni Waman of Ahmednagar and Sunanda Rajpaut, an individual entry, were placed second and third respectively.

Former Pune mayor Deepti Choudhari formally declared the meet, being conducted by the Pune District Amateur Athletic Association (PDAAA), opened.

As many as 850 athletes from 28 districts are vying for honours in the meet, being held for boys and girls under-14 and under-16 respectively.

Following are the results: (All Finals ) Boys Under-16: 5 Km Walk: Sunil Harale (Pune) 25.59.6 secs 1, Riaz Pathan (Jalna) 2, Pravin Patil (Sangli) 3.

Girls Under-16: 3 Km Walk: Chhaya Gaikwad (A'Nagar) 1, Rhoni Waman (A'Nagar) 2, Sunanda Rajput 3.

Triathlon: Boys Under-14 (100 mtr Long Jump&High Jump): Kamlesh Nadale (Mum Sub) (1202 pts) 1, Sandesh Shetty (1058 pts) 2, Aditya Chavane (Mum City) (929 pts) 3.

Girls Under-14 K Group (100, 800 mtr&Long Jump): Sanaya Ichapoorkar (1548 pts) 1, Madhur Anjarlekar (1519 pts) 2, Kurjita Konkone (1121) 3.
