TOKYO, Oct 15 (Reuters) Gold edged higher on Monday, as inflation concerns due to high oil prices kept the precious metal near its 28-year high, while platinum inched down from a record high though sentiment stayed bullish.

-- Japanese precious metal futures jumped, with the key gold futures <0JAU:> reaching a fresh 22-{ year high and the key platinum <0JPL:> hitting a new record high.

-- As of 0047 GMT, cash gold was trading at $749.60/750.40 an ounce, up from $748.40/749.10 in late New York on Friday.

-- On Thursday, the cash price rose as high as $753.60 -- its highest since January 1980.

-- COMEX gold futures were little changed in Asia after falling in New York on Friday. The most active December contract was trading up $0.8 or 0.1 percent at $754.6 from the New York settlement on Friday.

-- Precious metals are expected to be well-supported due to bullish oil prices.

U.S. crude futures were little changed on Monday, trading close to $84 a barrel on growing tensions between Turkey and Iraq, as well as lingering supply worries ahead of the northern hemisphere winter.

-- On Friday, South Africa's biggest mining union said it was preparing a strike notice which it hoped to submit to authorities next week to apply for a one-day protest against deaths and accidents at mines.

South Africa's Harmony Gold said it expected to lose 1,000 kg (32,150 ounces) of gold production following the closure of its Elandsrand mine after an accident last week.
