BJP urges EC against permitting Cong to inaugurate medical college
Shimla, Oct 15 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh unit of the BJP today urged the Election Commission (EC) to turn down the state Congress Government's request to inaugurate a medical college at Kangra, saying it will be a violation of the model code of conduct.
''Accepting the state government's request to inaugurate the 500-bed medical college and hospital at Kangra will definitely be in violation of the code of conduct and against the spirit of conducting free and fair polls in the state,'' party's state secretary H N Kashyap said here.
In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner and state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), he said the hospital was located at the northern part of the state where almost 50 per cent of the population was residing and accepting government's request after the announcement of polls would be wrong.
Mr Kashyap alleged that the ministers, chairman of boards and corporations and legislators were continuing with popular announcements to gain political mileage and against the model code of conduct.
The commission should take immediate steps to ensure that the ruling party was prevented from making popular announcements, he added.
