Chennai, Oct 14 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi today asked the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), of which his party is a key constituent, to remain alert and protect the country from ''communal and regressive forces''.

Lauding the Congress and Left parties for their efforts to avert mid-term elections to the Lok Sabha, he said in a statement here that the UPA and Left leaders should not jump to a hasty conclusion that ''communal and regressive forces'' had been contained.

The DMK patriarch was referring to the statement of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that his Government was not an one-issue Government and if the nuclear deal with the US did not come through, that was not the end of life. Besides, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi had spoken about coalition dharma in the wake of stiff opposition to the nuke deal from the Left parties, extending outside support to the UPA Government at the Centre.

Mr Karunanidhi pointed out that the DMK had played a major role in arriving at the 'good decision' through negotiations.

Praising Ms Gandhi and Dr Singh for their efforts in this direction, he thanked all those who had worked for averting mid-term elections.
