Sawant retains men's carrom title, Rashmi new women's Champ

Panaji, Oct 13 (UNI) Santosh Sawant of Maharashtra and M D Malini of Karnataka retained the Men's singles and Veteran Women's singles titles respectively in the 7th All India BSNL Carrom championship, which concluded at Peddem indoor complex, Mapusa, today.

Bihar Circle national champion Rashmi Kumar emerged as the new Women's singles champion while M Ramamurthy of Tamil Nadu claimed the Veteran Men's singles title.

In a closely contested Men's singles final, Sawant brushed aside the challange of James Pradhan of Orissa 24-25, 25-22, 25-22.

Sawant, who was trailing 24-25 in the first game, rallied and levelled in the second game 25-22 and won the decider 25-22 to retain the title.

In the Women's single final, Rashmi Kumari made short work of Bharati Medhi of Assam and won comfortably at 25-9, 25-0.

In the Veteran Men's singles finals, M Ramamurthy of Tamil Nadu defeated H P Joshi of Gujarat 25-22, 8-25, 25-20, while in the Veteran Women's singles finals, M D Malini beat A S Motagi of Maharashtra 25-9, 25-10.

V Satish of Tamil Nadu and Bhanu Das of Assam had to remain content with third place in the Men's and Women's singles respectivly. S R Prasad of Andhra Pradesh and S S Kanade of Maharashtra bagged the third place in the Veteran Men's and Women's singles respectively.

BSNL General Manager for Goa Circle Ashok Kumar Desarkar, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.
